LA CONDITION PUBLIQUE (A BOUVY -1901)
Tourisme, nord, france roubaix, france

La Condition Publique is the site on which the level of humidity in raw materials (wool, silk, cotton) was measured.  Both the weight and therefore the sales price were based on this measurement.

Built in 1901, this conditioning centre is situated on a site purchased by the town in 1894 to provide for the expansion of the textile industry and to deal with the shortcomings of previous centres.

The combinations of materials used (redbrick, multicoloured enamelled bricks, ceramics and blue stone) give the building a distinctive decorative nature of its own.  This site, a symbol of the town’s economic prosperity, is the subject of an ambitious reconversion project to turn it into a cultural centre.

NATIONAL HIGHER SCHOOL OF ARTS AND INDUSTRY
Tourisme, nord, france roubaix, france

Founded in 1889, The National Higher School of Textile Arts and Industry trains 47% of French "textile" engineers.

In 1876, the Municipal Council of Roubaix, keen to satisfy the population's demand for specialised teaching adapted to the needs of a large industrial town, created an establishment designed to consolidate all the academic schools (weaving, design) around a central theme, incorporating their collections, the museum of art and industry, and the library, which were all previously scattered in different locations around the town.

The library, built in 1881 and the amphitheatre are listed on the supplementary inventory as historic monuments.

PARISH CHURCH OF SAINT MARTIN (CHARLES LEROY -1848)
Tourisme, nord, france roubaix, france

The Church of Saint Martin is the oldest building in the town.

Today, no traces remain of the primitive church built in the late 9th century.  This was replaced by a three-nave structure, of which we can still admire the bell tower today (1511).  With the rapid expansion of the town, Charles Leroy was given the task of enlarging the church in 1848.  He proceeded to design a five-nave church in the neo-gothic style, similar to the south doorway.

The church of Saint Martin houses some remarkable recumbent statues in Tournai stone (including one of a child) and an interesting John the Baptist altarpiece made from multicoloured wood, originally from Antwerp (15th – 16th century).
